With the pads folded in, it is a standard walker. Simply lift the convenient handles and place the pads in the open position and the walker becomes an aid to help you up from a seated position. Here is how it works. From a seated position (a) position the walker in front of you with the rear legs closest to you. (b) have the knee pads in the open position (c) place your knees against the knee pads (d) place your hands on the handles located on the front cross frame. (e) Simply pull yourself up using the leverage gained from using the handles and your knees against the pads.
